Vertebrae: 29 - 30. Diagnosis: breeding males with edges of dorsal and caudal fins orange or red; 2-4 large, vaguely outlined dark blotches mid-laterally from operculum to caudal peduncle and a blotch on top of caudal peduncle; caudal rays rather densely scaled to near edge; caudal peduncle deep (Ref. 2).
Feeds on the soft, flocculent bottom deposits which consist of finely divided plant material (Ref. 2), algae, detritus (Ref. 52307), protozoa and bacteria (Ref. 2, 52307). Female mouthbrooder (Ref. 27292, 52307).

Female broods the young and eggs in the mouth in the shelter of sandbanks in the Zaire of Yangambi. In various aquarium observations, male builds shallow spawning nests; female deposits eggs in nest; male fertilizes eggs; female takes eggs in mouth; female swallows additional sperms (Ref. 37042).
