Low total vertebral (55-58) and dorsal fin ray (99-113) counts; gut loop formed by about 5.6 mm; head relatively large (HL >about 22% BL); in preflexion larvae, pigmentation on pectoral fin base by 4.5 mm; in flexion larvae, pigmentation on dorsal and anal fins and row posteriolaterally on tail; pigment increasing on peritoneum on postflexion larvae and juvenile specimens. Pigmentation: Preflexion: by 2.9 mm, still forming on eye, patches above, under, and anterior to gut; near anus, patches ventrally along tail, heavy dorsally and ventrally on posterior half of tail except at tip; by about 4.5 mm, on pectoral fin base, cheek, snout, lower jaw, gas bladder, and cleithral symphysis; by about 7 mm, on branchiostegal region, and midlaterally along posterior third of tail; by about 8 mm, spreading laterally on gut. Flexion-juvenile: increasing on head, body, and tail, especially on peritoneum and dorsal and anal fin margins. Sequence of fin development: dorsal and anal and pelvics, pectorals, caudal. |
