Body is elongated and cylindrical; head is triangular and of moderate size; snout pointed; eyes round and moderately large; mouth barely reaches the eye. Gut is >80% BL. At 10.7 mm, caudal and dorsal fins are present. Finfold remnants are also present ventrally anterior to the anus. Adipose fin is present. Body pigmentation consists of one double dorsal and one single mediolateral line of melanophores starting at the anterior margin of the dorsal fin, and one ventral row of melanophores. At 18.0-19.0 mm, body deepens; eyes and mouth become smaller. Anal fin rays are present. Three of the four usual vertical black bands begin to appear laterally behind the pectoral fins, at the posterior margin of the dorsal final and anterior margin of the anal fin. Once the fourth bar appears, it resembles a triangular spot on the caudal peduncle. At 24.0 mm, juvenile stage is reached.
