Description of life cycle and mating behavior Males clean the insides of bivalve shells and cover the outside with sand in preparation for the eggs that will be deposited by the female (Ref. 46373). Nesting males exhibit breeding colouration with four dark bars across side, a blue spot on the first dorsal fin and dark coloration on pelvic fins and edge of anal fin (Ref. 4696). Males defend the nest, cleaning and fanning the eggs until hatching (Ref. 27118).
