Bodianus after Bodiano or Pudiano, from the Portuguese pudor, meaning modesty (Jordan & Evermann, 1896).
  Etymology of specific epithet  
Name from the Greek mesos for middle, and masculine noun thorax or breast plate; apparently in reference to the prominent diagonal black band on the body of adults of this species (Ref. 75973).
