From the Greek protos, first, and the Latin anguilla, eel, in reference to the early divergence of the genus among anguilliforms (Ref. 87802). The genus name was spelled Prot*o*anguilla in the first pre-electronic-published version then emended in Prot**anguilla in the version 2 and 3. Spelling to be confirmed when the original description will be paper-published.
