Distribution: Widely distributed in tropical and subtropical seas. Eastern Atlantic: south of Portugal to Madeira. Western Atlantic: Gulf of Mexico (Ref. 27768). Northwest Atlantic: Canada (Ref. 5951). Northwest Pacific: Japan (Ref. 559). Southwest Pacific: New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Eastern Pacific: California Current region (Ref. 35604).
Adult biology: Mesopelagic (Ref. 58302). Usually caught in small aggregations (Ref. 6345). Exhibits daily vertical migrations (Ref. 6345). Feeds on plankton (Ref. 6345).
Diagnosis: Extremely long eye stalks, average 53% HL in preflexion and flexion stages, decreasing in postflexion stage; heavy pigment series on gut and myomeres. Pigmentation: Preflexion: lateral gut series becomes subdivided (series of 4-5 on terminal section, 8-12 on hindgut, up to about 12 on foregut); patch on opercle; series of 3 lateral to liver; series of 3 embedded at isthmus; on lower jaw; subocular, from jaw to opercle; series on hypaxial myomeres from pectoral fin to caudal fin; below tip of notochord. Flexion-postflexion: hind- and foregut series increase to 12-15; series on hypaxial myomeres along entire body in late postflexion stage; on snout; on anterior surface of pectoral fin base. Transformation: several per myomere in epaxial and hypaxial series. Sequence of fin development: caudal, anal, pectorals, dorsal and pelvics. See also LARVAE table.
