Distribution: Southeast Atlantic: Atlantic coast from Morocco to the English Channel. Also known from the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
Adult biology: Found over hard bottoms. Mainly nocturnal, it feeds on small invertebrates. Oviparous (Ref. 205). Spawn in April (Marseille) or July (England); eggs are laid under mussel-shells or stones and guarded by the male (Ref. 5981).
Diagnosis: Ventral row consists of 4 to 5 melanophores, only 1 or 2 melanophores in the caudal region. See also LARVAE table.
Climate Zone: subtropical; 50°N - 20°N
