Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Norway to Angola. Also known from the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
Adult biology: Live on mixed or muddy bottoms. Feed on small fishes and invertebrates (Ref. 4704).
Diagnosis: Few melanophores in dorsal contour. Evenly spaced small melanophores in ventral row. Some melanophores in the otocystic region. At 6-7 mm length spines appear on the head near the base of the tentacle. The caudal cluster or band is located between 18th - 21st postanal segments. Larvae settles on the bottom at around 16-30 mm long (Ref. 35388). See also LARVAE table.
