Distribution: Africa: Gambia, Senegal, Niger, the coastal basins of the Côte d'Ivoire (Comoé, Bandama and Sassandra), Volta, Chad basin, Nile, Lake Albert and Lake Turkana. Three forms exists: (Alestes baremoze soudaniensis) West African inland, (Alestes baremoze eburneensis) West African Coastal and (Alestes baremoze baremoze) Nilotic.
Adult biology: Mainly diurnal. There is considerable flexibility in its diet, A. baremoze shifts from zooplankton to zoobenthos, detritus and macrophytes as plankton densities decline (Ref. 28714). Occurs at a temperature range of 14.6-35.0°C. In the Malamfatori area (Tchad), seine-net fishery on the River Yobe depends on seasonal upstream (from Lake Chad) and downstream migration during the flood (August-December) and dry (January-March) seasons, respectively. Also, there is an intensive gillnet fishery from July-October at the river mouth. A. baremoze moves offshore (in Lake Chad) beginning March.
Diagnosis: Day 5: intestinal tract appears. Days 5-12: less drastic changes, general appearance stays the same. Days 12-23: caudal, dorsal and anal appear. Days 20-30: ventral and adipose appear. Days 15-26: anal rays appear. Days 12-24: tail skeletal structure (urostyle, hypural, and caudal rays) appear. Month 1: fish resemble adult, but have a primordial fin residue along the belly, to anus. See also LARVAE table.
