Distribution: Northeast Atlantic: southern North Sea, Irish Sea, and southwestern Ireland to Portugal. Mediterranean Sea: Málaga, Spain.
Adult biology: Occurs in inshore waters, even intertidally, on sandy shores (Ref. 6444).
Diagnosis: A preopercular spine appears at 5 mm length, bifurcates at 7-8 mm, and the tip of the ventral branch slightly bifurcates again at a length of 10 mm. See also LARVAE table.
Climate Zone: temperate; 60°N - 35°N
