Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: English Channel (occasional) to Mauritania including Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands. Also throughout the Mediterranean.
Adult biology: Found on rocks, muddy bottoms and submarine caves. Oviparous, probably protogynous (Ref. 5506).
Diagnosis: The operculum has 2 protruding crests, an internal one with very low teeth and an externalone with 5 points. Margin of the operculum with 1 small tooth and with a scapular spine. Chromatophores above the encephalon. See also LARVAE table.
Climate Zone: subtropical; 51°N - 16°N
