Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: west Gibraltar to Cape Bojador (West Sahara) and Canary Islands including western Mediterranean and Morocco.
Adult biology: Depth range from 85-550 m (Ref. 04704) and from 288-897 m in the eastern Ionian Sea (Ref. 56504). Feed on small fishes and invertebrates. Spawn during autumn in the Mediterranean.
Diagnosis: At 7 mm length the dorso-ventral cluster starts at the 210-220 caudal segment and extends over 3-4 segments. At 9 mm the urochord has not yet turned up and the cluster is between the 21th and 24th caudal vertebra. At 12mm:D 106-119 . See also LARVAE table.
