Distribution: Eastern Atlantic: Mediterranean and Portugal to Angola, including the Azores. Range reported to extend south to northern Namibia (Ref. 27121).
Adult biology: Lives amongst rocks, gravel, coral (Ref. 2683) and in submarine caves on the continental shelf and upper slope. Nocturnal. Feeds on crustaceans and small fishes. Protogynous.
Diagnosis: Operculum with 2 and later with 3 series of spines, a more internal one of shorter spines and two more external ones that exhibit a long, strong spine almost in their middle. The dorsal fin starts developing very early (ca 4.0 mm); one of the first dorsal rays is very elongated, especially in the youngest postlarvae. Spinous ridge above the eye in the late stage.
