Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Stomiinae
Max. size:  43 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 400 - 1463 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Portugal south to Democratic Republic of the Congo; Namibia to South Africa. Western Atlantic: USA to Gulf of Mexico; Brazil to Argentina. Western Pacific: Japan (Ref. 559), Australia (Ref. 7300) and New Zealand (Ref. 5755). Southeast Pacific: Chile (Ref. 9068). Indian Ocean.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 15-17. Body iridescent silver in color (Ref. 3980). Slender body, caudal peduncle strongly compressed, extremely short. Photophores with a bronzy rim. Barbel pale, bulb and filaments yellowish (Ref. 37473).
Biology:  Inhabits deep oceanic waters to more than 1,000 m depth (Ref. 4783). Meso- and bathypelagic (Ref. 58302).
