Family:  Cyprinidae (Minnows or carps), subfamily: Smiliogastrinae
Max. size:  12 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Groot (Gamtoos system) and larger tributaries of the Gourits system, South Cape, South Africa.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in standing or slow-flowing pools with a soft or rocky bottom. Thrives in dams and tolerates turbid waters. Juveniles occur in large shoals, adults in small groups. Feeds off the substrate on algae and detritus. Breeds in summer, moving into riffle areas to lay eggs (Ref. 7248).
