Family:  Percidae (Perches), subfamily: Etheostomatinae
Max. size:  18 cm TL (male/unsexed); max. reported age: 4 years
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: found only in the upper Tennessee River drainage in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia, USA.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabit clear, fairly deep, rocky pools (usually below riffles) of creeks and small rivers. Large males often found in rocky riffles (Ref. 5723). Juveniles feed on mayfly and dipteran larvae, while the adults consume caddisfly larvae (Ref. 10294). Eggs are found buried in the substrate (Ref. 7043).
