Environment:  demersal; marine
Distribution:  Northwest Pacific: southern Korea to southern Japan, except the Ryukyus.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 9-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-10; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-8. U-shaped premaxilla groove entirely without scales, even in large specimens. Posterior margin of maxilla usually not beyond a vertical through anterior margin of inner dermal eye opening (rarely just short of vertical). Scales between 5th dorsal fin spine base 3.5. Body often with 6-8 irregular, dusky, oblique and vertical bands dorsolaterally and ventrolaterally (apparent in juveniles and often observed in large specimens). Pelvic fin vivid or dull yellow with a strong black band and clear white distal margin posteriorly when fresh. Supraneural bones 3 (Ref. 35850).
