Family:  Stomiidae (Barbeled dragonfishes), subfamily: Melanostomiinae
Max. size:  22.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 20 - 1900 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: Portugal and the Azores south to Guinea, and from Democratic Republic of the Congo to Namibia. Western Atlantic: USA south to Cuba, off Puerto Rico, and off Brazil.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 23-30. Body elongate and very slender. Long, protrusible snout, long chin barbel bearing a single or double terminal bulbs (Ref. 37039).
Biology:  Mesopelagic species (Ref. 4468).

Threat to humans:  harmless
