Diaphus vanhoeffeni (Brauer, 1906)

Family:  Myctophidae (Lanternfishes), subfamily: Diaphinae
Max. size:  4.2 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  pelagic-oceanic; marine; depth range 40 - 750 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: 20°N to 15°S, with western limit at about 30°W. Endemic to the Atlantic but two specimens from a stomach of a hake off the La Plata River mouth.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  High-oceanic, mesopelagic species. Found at 275-750 m during the day and at 40-125 m during the night. Sexually mature from about 2.7 cm (Ref. 4479).
