Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Lake Tanganyika (Ref. 55984).
Diagnosis:  Description: toothplates of the premaxilla and palate with large and loosely spaced teeth; toothplates on vomer and pterygoids of equal width; body width at pectoral-fin insertions 3.9-4.5 times in standard length; interorbital 2.7-3.1 times in head length; distance between posterior nares 3.7-3.9 times in head length (Ref. 75075).
Biology:  Inhabits muddy bottoms with preference for depths 100 to 140 m. Feeds mainly on fish (Ref. 1967). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Both male and female guard the eggs (Ref. 52177). An important food fish (Ref. 4537)
