Family:  Cottidae (Sculpins)
Max. size:  8.4 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; brackish; marine; depth range 0 - 290 m
Distribution:  Northeast Atlantic: southeastern part of Barents Sea, off Novaya Zemlya, eastwards from Kara Sea to northern part of Bering Sea to Hudson Strait.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 7-9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-14; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 10-13. Caudal fin rounded. Head greyish-brown above, body lighter, with large, irregular dark spots forming cross-bands; stripes on all fins orange, pectoral tips white; oval black spot on hind part of spinous dorsal fin in males (Ref. 4698).
Biology:  Found on sand-mud bottoms, mostly in brackish waters with bottom temperatures mostly near to or below 0°C and salinities of 10-15 ppt (Ref. 4698). Benthic (Ref. 58426). Feeds on small bottom invertebrates (Ref. 4698).
