Family:  Alepisauridae (Lancetfishes)
Max. size:  96 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  bathypelagic; marine; depth range 640 - 1591 m
Distribution:  Circumglobal.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 40-48; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 13-16. Iridescent brownish-black above, paler below; dorsal fin with horizontal row of white spots (Ref. 4059).
Biology:  Feed on euphausiid shrimps and fishes. Edible but flesh is bland (Ref. 5217).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 01 July 2014 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
