Etymology: Careproctus: Greek, kara = face + Greek, proktos = anus (Ref. 45335); gilberti: Named for C.H. Gilbert, U.S. ichthyologist (Ref. 6885).

Dorsal and anal fins extending to about halfway along caudal; caudal fin narrow, truncate; middle rays of pectorals short, lower rays much exserted; pelvic fins modified a adhesive disc with a thickened margin, small slightly wider than long (Ref. 6885). Creamy white to pale pink, sometimes pale brown dorsally; dusky on fins; silvery on lower half of blue eyes (Ref. 6885).
