Remarks | 'black', from Old English 'blæc', of obscure origins but probably related to Latin 'flagrare' and Greek 'phlégein', i.e., burn, from Indo-European 'phleg-, bhleg-' (p. 65 in Ref. 11979). Their fused teeth joined at the front in a groove forming a pair of beak-like tooth plates and their flapping of their pectoral fins during swimming gave them their name parrotfishes (Ref. 5288). |
