Associated with suckers in Secwépemc mythology. 'Redmouth', i.e., mouth of red color, alluding to the localized areas of red at the angles of the mouth, sometimes extending along the cheek and opercle to pectoral fin, and also along sides, note also that breeding fish of both sexes are highly colored with red lower lips (Ref. 1998); 'sucker', i.e., a mouth adapted for sucking or adhering (p. 1178 in Ref. 11978) and originally denoted a baby still at the breast, from Indo-European base 'seug-, seuk-' which originated in imitation of the sound of sucking from the mother's breast (p. 509 in Ref. 11979). |
