Remarks 'porcupine', i.e., spiny pig, from Latin 'porcus', i.e., pig and 'spinus, i.e., spine (p. 404, Ref. 11979); 'fish' from Germanic 'fiskaz' from same source as Latin 'piscis' from Indo-European word 'piskos' (p. 229 in Ref. 11979); 'porcupinefish', applied to the bloated, spiny appearance that this fish takes when threatened.
