Remarks 'Arenque' from Francique 'hâring' (German 'hering') and Latinized as 'aringus' (Ref. 9404); Old English 'haering', i.e., the gray fish, from prehistoric West Germanic 'kheringgaz', i.e., 'kher' = English 'hoar', i.e., silvery gray color of herring (Ref. 11979); 'del Pacifico', i.e., of the Pacific Ocean. Name not listed in ASFIS version 2006 (Ref. 56807).
